Cinque Terre
Coastal Towns · Weekend Escape
Five small towns clinging to the Ligurian cliffs, connected by a single coastal train.
Five small towns on the Ligurian coast, connected by a single train line and a coastal path. The whole region is a national park, and cars are mostly kept out.

Atmosphere
What the place feels like
Pastel houses stacked on cliffs above small fishing harbors. Vineyards on terraces above the towns. The pace is set by the train timetable and by lunch, which is long.
Getting there
Transport
Trains run between La Spezia and Levanto every fifteen to thirty minutes. A Cinque Terre Card covers all five stops and the trail network. Driving is genuinely pointless — most towns ban outside cars.
On the water
Ferries and trains
The regional train links the five villages in a few minutes each. From April to October, small ferries run between Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola and Riomaggiore — slower than the train, but a much better way to see the cliffs.
Where to stay
Local towns and bases
Vernazza is the prettiest harbor. Manarola has the best sunset. Corniglia, the only village without sea access, is the quietest. Stay in Levanto or La Spezia if you want a real town with restaurants open after nine.
When to go
Seasonal travel
May, June and September are the sweet spot. July and August are uncomfortably busy. November and February are quiet, half-closed, and surprisingly nice if you want to walk.
At the table
Food and cafés
Pesto alla Genovese, anchovies from Monterosso, focaccia with everything, and small glasses of Sciacchetrà. Order the fritto misto and a litre of house white.
On foot
Walking routes
The Sentiero Azzurro connects the five villages along the coast. The Monterosso–Vernazza and Vernazza–Corniglia sections are the most rewarding when open. The high paths through the vineyards are quieter and more interesting.
Practical notes
Before you go
- 01Trail sections close after storms — check the park website before you go.
- 02Trains are cheap; buy a multi-day card if you plan to move daily.
- 03Avoid weekends if possible.
- 04Bring proper shoes — the trails are uneven stone.
