Stockholm Archipelago
Island · Ferry Route · Weekend Escape
Thousands of islands within a short ferry ride of the city, each with its own pace.
Roughly thirty thousand islands spread across the Baltic east of Stockholm. The inner islands are a half-hour ferry from the city; the outer islands take half a day and feel like a different country.

Atmosphere
What the place feels like
Smooth granite, pine forests, painted wooden cabins, and very long summer evenings. Sound carries strangely across the water.
Getting there
Transport
Waxholmsbolaget operates the public ferry network from central Stockholm. Most journeys start at Strömkajen, in front of the Grand Hotel.
On the water
Ferries and trains
A multi-day Båtluffarkortet pass is the simplest way to hop between islands. Connections to Vaxholm, Grinda, Sandhamn, Utö and Möja all run from the same central piers.
Where to stay
Local towns and bases
Vaxholm is the closest and busiest. Grinda and Möja are the classic middle-ring choices. Sandhamn is the sailing village. Utö, in the south, is the quietest of the big four.
When to go
Seasonal travel
Mid-June through August is the active season. Late August into early September is the local favorite — warm water, far fewer crowds, all infrastructure still running.
At the table
Food and cafés
Pickled herring, Baltic shrimp on bread, smoked fish, and very simple food in island inns. Order a Pilsner with whatever you have.
On foot
Walking routes
Every island has a marked loop. Grinda's perimeter walk takes about three hours and ends back at the harbor restaurant.
Practical notes
Before you go
- 01Pack light — most islands have no taxis and bag-carrying is on you.
- 02Cash is unnecessary; cards work even at small kiosks.
- 03Ferries reduce sharply after mid-September.
