Atmosphere

What the place feels like

Calm, ordered, Scandinavian. Most villages are small and seasonal — busy for ten weeks in summer, almost closed the rest of the year.

Getting there

Transport

Trains from Gothenburg run up the coast to Strömstad. A car opens up the smaller islands and the inland archipelago, but the main villages are reachable by bus.

On the water

Ferries and trains

Free yellow Västtrafik ferries link the main islands — Marstrand, Käringön, Gullholmen, Smögen. The Bohuslän ferry network counts as public transport.

Where to stay

Local towns and bases

Smögen is the famous fishing village. Fjällbacka, north of it, was Ingrid Bergman's summer base. Marstrand has the fort and the sailing scene. Käringön is the quiet one.

When to go

Seasonal travel

Late June through mid-August for the full village rhythm. Early September is the local secret — warm water, no crowds, restaurants still open.

At the table

Food and cafés

Shellfish — langoustines, oysters, brown crab. Most villages have a smokehouse. Salt Smögen and Slip 7 are the names worth looking up.

On foot

Walking routes

Easy granite-island loops on every island. The cliffs at Stångehuvud above Lysekil are an easy hour. The coastal path from Smögen to Hasselösund is a good half-day.

Practical notes

Before you go

  • 01Ferries are free but follow timetables — check return times.
  • 02Bring warm layers even in July.
  • 03Restaurants close early in the shoulder season.
