A long, narrow lake with a ferry network and a string of villages worth slow days.
A long, narrow alpine lake in northern Italy, with a public ferry network and a string of small towns worth several slow days.

Atmosphere
What the place feels like
Mountains drop directly into the water. Villas, gardens, and pastel villages stack up the steep shore. Mornings are still; afternoons can be windy.
Getting there
Transport
Trains run from Milan to Como, Varenna and Lecco. Cars are awkward — the lakeside roads are narrow and busy. Use the ferries.
On the water
Ferries and trains
Navigazione Laghi runs a frequent ferry network across the lake. The central triangle — Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio — has crossings every twenty to thirty minutes in season.
Where to stay
Local towns and bases
Varenna for trains and quiet. Bellagio for the famous view and slightly more crowds. Menaggio as a base for the west shore. Tremezzo and Lenno for villa gardens.
When to go
Seasonal travel
April through June and September through October are the best windows. July and August are warm and busy. Winter is quiet, beautiful, and partially closed.
At the table
Food and cafés
Lake fish, simple risotto, focaccia from the bakeries. Aperitivo by the water is the actual ritual to plan around.
On foot
Walking routes
The Greenway del Lago, between Colonno and Cadenabbia, is the calm lakeside walk. The trail up to Rifugio Menaggio gives the high view.

Before you go
- 01Buy a one-day ferry pass on travel days.
