Atmosphere

What the place feels like

Calm, well-kept, generally quieter than the Italian lakes. Mornings are misty over the water; evenings bring the light off the Alps on the far shore.

Getting there

Transport

Trains run along both shores. The Swiss side has the more frequent service; the French side is quieter and cheaper. Driving is easy outside Geneva and Lausanne.

On the water

Ferries and trains

CGN ferries cross the lake regularly between Lausanne, Évian, Thonon and smaller ports. Old paddle-steamers still run on several routes in summer.

Where to stay

Local towns and bases

Lausanne and Montreux on the Swiss side. Évian-les-Bains and Yvoire on the French side. Vevey for quiet and the Lavaux vineyards. Nyon for a calm small-town base.

When to go

Seasonal travel

May through September. The Lavaux vineyards are most beautiful in late September during harvest. Winter is misty and quiet but rarely closed.

At the table

Food and cafés

Lake perch fillets, raclette in winter, vineyard whites from Lavaux. Both shores have strong food markets.

On foot

Walking routes

The Lavaux vineyard path between Lutry and Saint-Saphorin is the best half-day in the region. The lakeside promenade from Lausanne-Ouchy is a calm easy walk.
