Aran Islands
Island · Hidden Towns
Stone walls, Atlantic wind, and a quieter version of Ireland off the Galway coast.
Three small limestone islands off the Galway coast, divided by stone walls and exposed to the full Atlantic. A quieter, slower version of Ireland that still speaks Irish daily.

Atmosphere
What the place feels like
Wind, low light, grey stone, and very few cars. The pace is genuinely slow. Conversations in the pubs run long.
Getting there
Transport
Ferries leave from Rossaveal, west of Galway, and from Doolin in County Clare. Inis Mór, the largest island, has minibuses, bicycles and a few taxis; smaller islands are cycled or walked.
On the water
Ferries and trains
The Aran Islands Ferries crossing from Rossaveal takes about forty minutes to Inis Mór. From Doolin the trip is shorter but more weather-dependent. Inter-island hops run in summer.
Where to stay
Local towns and bases
Kilronan on Inis Mór is the main village. Inis Meáin, the middle island, has almost nothing on it — a knitwear factory, a restaurant, a pub. Inis Oírr is small enough to walk in a morning.
When to go
Seasonal travel
April to October for reliable ferries. Summer is busy with day visitors; stay overnight to see the islands empty after the last boat back.
At the table
Food and cafés
Fresh fish, brown bread, soda farls, simple pub food done well. Inis Meáin Restaurant is a destination in itself, open only a few months a year.
On foot
Walking routes
Dún Aonghasa on Inis Mór is the famous walk — a prehistoric fort on a cliff edge. The Worm Hole and Black Fort, also on Inis Mór, are quieter and harder to find.
Practical notes
Before you go
